How to Prepare Your Property for This Weekend’s Heavy Rain Event in Brisbane & South East QLD

What’s Happening With the Weather?

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued severe weather warnings for heavy rainfall across Brisbane and parts of South East Queensland this weekend. A flood watch is already in effect for the region as intense rain, thunderstorms, and possible flash flooding develop.

Meteorologists are forecasting significant rainfall totals, in some places up to 300–400 mm over three days. This soaking could cause surface water pooling, river rises and flash flooding in low-lying and urban areas.

With this in mind, now’s the time to prepare your property, both outside and inside, to minimise water damage, protect your plumbing, and keep your family safe.

🏠 General Property Preparation Tips

  1. Clean & Clear Gutters and Downpipes

Blocked gutters and downpipes can cause rainwater to overflow and damage walls or foundations. Make sure they are free of leaves, debris and build-up ahead of the rain. Water should discharge freely away from your house.

  2. Protect Outdoor Drainage Points

Check that storm drains, grates and surface drains aren’t blocked by mulch, rubbish or garden waste. If water can’t drain properly, it can pool around buildings and pathways.

  3. Check Sump Pumps & Drains

If your property has a sump pump or basement drains, test them now to ensure they’re working correctly. Consider installing a battery backup if power outages occur.

  4. Fix Yard Slope & Soil Erosion

Ensure soil around your home slopes away from the foundation. Installing ground anchors or barriers can help redirect surface water safely.

  5. Secure Loose Items

Strong winds and heavy rain can move outdoor furniture, trampolines, loose pots and materials. Bring them inside or secure them firmly.

  6. Emergency Contacts & Supplies

Have emergency phone numbers handy (SES, local council and plumber). Keep torches, batteries, first-aid kits and non-perishable food ready in case conditions worsen.

🚰 Plumbing-Focused Preparations

Heavy rain puts extra pressure on plumbing and drainage systems, so taking these steps can prevent water damage and sewer issues.

  1. Inspect Stormwater Drains

Stormwater systems can become overloaded in heavy rain. Ensure your property’s stormwater exit points are unblocked. If blocked, water can back up into yards, garages or homes.

  2. Check Sewer Vents & Backflow Prevention

Rain can overwhelm sewer lines and cause backflow issues — where wastewater flows back into your household drains. Consider installing a backflow prevention valve if you don’t have one, and make sure vents aren’t obstructed.

  3. Look at Outdoor Taps, Hoses & Irrigation

Disconnect hoses from outdoor taps to prevent water from being siphoned back into the system. Turn off irrigation systems, heavy rain provides all the water your garden needs.

  4. Fix Leaks Now

Small leaks might not seem urgent in dry weather but can become big problems during prolonged rain. Fix dripping taps, pipe leaks or signs of corrosion now to prevent larger damage.

  5. Inspect Roof & Gutter Flashings

Leaks in roofing or gaps around gutter junctions can let water into ceilings and walls. Look for water stains, soft spots or loose flashings and get them repaired before rain hits.

🌧 What to Expect: Rainfall & Flood Watches

According to the BOM, initial flood watches are active across Brisbane and other SEQ catchments, with a risk of surface, localised and minor flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

Make sure you’re subscribed to local council alerts and BOM warnings as conditions can change quickly, and forecasts may be updated throughout the weekend.

🛠️ Final Tips to Stay Dry & Safe

  • Keep important documents and valuables stored above ground level where flood risk is highest.

  • Park vehicles in sheltered or higher-ground areas if possible.

  • Avoid walking or driving through floodwater. As little as 15 cm of moving water can knock you off your feet.
